It’s our first time in Thailand, so we decided to dig deeper into it’s heritage and wander around the country’s capital, Bangkok.

We only have 3 days to indulge with Thai’s culture, food and adventure, although I must admit that the Land of Smiles is worth coming back again and again. I never really said goodbye, because my intuition tells me that I’m going to see it again soon.

So many temples to check out in one day, and then there’s shopping. I’ll go crazy on both.

After our Bromo Sunrise Tour, we returned to our hotel for a quick breakfast at half past 9 in the morning.

An hour later, we were ushered to the van that will take us to Surabaya. No one really mentioned that as we reached the town of Probolinggo, near the registration area, we have to switch vehicle. To our surprise, all those going to Surabaya will take the public Aircon bus. We left some fellow tourists waiting for their service to travel back to Yogyakarta or further to Ijen and Bali. We were with the other couple who is heading to Surabaya airport.

It was a dreaded 5 hours journey to Stasiun Pasar Turi (Pasar Turi Station) in Surabaya. Now, I know why they dubbed traffic in Indonesia a nightmare. It’s terribly bad.

From the Surabaya Bus station, we hailed a cab to take us to the train station.

Fortunately, one lady from the train station counter can speak english. We asked for Eksekutif train to Jakarta (Gambir Station) and she suggested Sembrani which leaves at 6:30 PM. Tickets are priced at IDR 310,000 each. Great, we still have two and a half hours to explore Surabaya and catch a late lunch.

We deposited our luggage at the store which offers safekeeping and walked outside the station to find a place to eat and when we got too tired, Mr. HavenHunter hailed an Angkot, a local minibus transport. We went down to the nearest mall with a supermarket and some fast food chains.

There aren’t any large malls nearby, so we decided to go back and kill time at the train station instead.

Night trains are a backpacker’s bestfriend. It’s a great way to save money for accommodation and pay for the cheap train fare instead. We get to lose no time and will be waking up to a different city. Not as comfortable as hotel bed though.

Sembrani is a little worn out and for business class and executive class train, it’s not a posh one. I’m on the verge of exchanging our tickets to Argo Anggrek which I learned is a newer train. It will leave at 8:00 PM that night.

When traveling to Indonesia, forget about the time, because everything don’t normally come on time. Our supposedly 6:00 AM arrival at Jakarta’s Stasiun Gambir was late by two and a half hour.

Upon arrival, we freshened up and changed clothes at the restroom. I even heard splashing of water, so I’m guessing visitors can use the restroom to bathe.

We deposited our luggage for safekeeping as our prior decision to go explore Jakarta before our red eye flight to Manila.

Our first stop is the National Monument (MONAS tower) located at Merdeka (Freedom) Square park next to Gambir station. This 422 ft. tower symbolizes the fight for Indonesia’s independence.

There is a beautiful pond along the park that sits beyond Indonesia’s national hero, Prince Deponegoro statue.

The Istiqlal Mosque can be seen from afar. It is the biggest moque in Southeast Asia where a Cathedral Church towers right in front of it.

We headed to Mangga Dua to check out the shopping scene. We first indulge ourselves with an appetizing lunch at A&W.

Mangga Dua is a cluster of large shopping center selling cheap finds from clothings to footwear, accessories, etc. at wholesale and retail prices. It’s like Divisoria’s 168 of Indonesia.

Our next stop is Jalan Surabaya to find some local handicrafts. I still find it a little pricey than Yogyakarta – Malioboro market. Too bad we missed out a good shopping at Yogyakarta. The whole stretch of Jalan Surabaya is a feast for antique collectors searching for Wayang Golek (Javanese Puppets), Indonesian Traditional Batik and old handicrafts.

We also went to Pasaraya Grande Shopping Mall at Blok M to check out the Indonesian Antiques and handcrafted goods.

We decided to head back to Gambir Station and pick our things when Mr. HavenHunter find it difficult to maneuver his sprained feet. Just outside the train station are Damri bus going to Soekarno Hatta International Airport Terminal 2.

At the airport, I couldn’t resist spending my last Indonesian Rupiah with this Javanese Dolls, Rama and Shinta. I like Shinta’s dress much than Sita.

A few more Indonesian Batiks (sarong) for souvenirs too.

Mr. Haven Hunter checked the counter for lost baggage to claim the tripod we missed out during our arrival in Jakarta. He was taken to the warehouse, but after tedious search along with a lot of Cebu Pacific passengers claiming for lost items too, the tripod is nowhere to be found.

Our whole Indonesia backpacking took us into a roller coaster of culture, heritage and breathtaking nature.

We reached Manila at half past 5 in the morning.

We were optimistic about the weather and hopeful with our shoestring itinerary to Yogyakarta, the southern part of Central Java, Indonesia. Continuing the first day of our Java Journeys, we met Rudy and Toto from Sosro Tours.

We still have a few minutes before our car service shows up and so we asked Rudy where we can have our money exchange. He pointed us to Mulia Money Changer inside the perimeter of Inna Garuda Hotel. It’s along Jalan Malioboro, and they have good rates compared to the one at the airport. Oh boy, I was a millionaire in a day. Exchange rate was: US$1 = Rp 9,000.

We manage to freshen up back at our room before heading out to meet Toto, our driver for the day.

I forgot to mention that I was surprised to learn that Indonesia uses right-hand drive vehicles. Nevertheless, we were comfortable with our service car, the Suzuki APV and its quite early to tell how bad the traffic can be.

Toto don’t speak that much, maybe because his knowledge in english is pretty limited. Accordingly, we practiced the little english-indonesian phrases we brought with us. We did pretty great though because he took us to a fine Batik shop in the afternoon.

Before we hit 25 miles away out of town to Borobudur, we stop by a gasoline station, and I was amazed that there are a number of females working as Gas Station Attendants here. Quite a tough job for ladies, I’m all hats off to them.

We continued the road trip from Jakarta to Magelang. We passed by several shops that sells Stone Sculptures and Statues. They were of intricate details of Buddha and other garden materials. It would have been nice if we had photos of them, but as you can see we were really exhausted and we can’t help but steal a few naps along the way.

By the time we reached, Borobudur Temple Compounds, it was already 1 in the afternoon at a scorching heat of probably the hottest weather in Central Java.

There were lines in the cashier but then I have to ask if foreigners go on the same line too, then they pointed me out to another building.

On that account, we entered a nearby building, a special door for foreign visitors. Air-conditioned lounge with free drinks. This comes with a hefty price tag too. Entrance fee to Borobudur Temple:

For Non-Indonesians, US$15 or Rp 135,000.
For Registered Students, US$ 8 or Rp 72,000.
For Locals and Indonesian Adults, Rp 15,000 or less than US$2

Camera and Video Camera fees are already waived for Non-Indonesians.

I have been naughty a bit, and showed them my “student ID” so I can get a discounted rate. Then paid for the regular fee for Mr. HavenHunter. He could pass as a student too you know, but I forget to get his card on time.

We slid out of the other side of the room and were greeted by a vast lawn and hundreds of tourists and locals too. Some were having a picnic, some resting under the trees and the others strolling. We chanced upon the toy train, waiting for passengers, so we hopped in.

A while later, we were in the foot of Borobudur Temple. It was a magnificent Unesco World Cultural Heritage Site dating from 8th century AD. It was built in three tiers, a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s.

It’s near proximity to Mt. Merapi and Mt. Merbabu caused Borobudur Temple to be partially buried after a massive eruption in the 10th century.

The heat is unforgiving. It was too much, and it doesn’t help that thousands of people, students, visitors and locals are already crowding the place. It was hard to find a good angle without those umbrellas and heads blocking the way.

The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. Intricate carvings depicting the teachings of Buddha cover every wall of Borobudur.

In Indonesia, ancient temples are known as candi; thus “Borobudur Temple” is locally known as Candi Borobudur. Located at the centre of ancient Borobudur structure is a central stupa that signifies Buddha’s enlightenment and a symbol of eternity. It’s the world’s largest Buddhist stuppa. Unlike the 72 bell-shaped smaller stupas surrounding the terrace, there’s nothing on the central stupa – empty because it represents Nirvana.

If only we have the whole afternoon to spare, it would be nice to camp in the ground, have picnic or go biking.

By the time we went down, we were already exhausted.

Going through the exit, we passed by the market alley which sells a lot of souvenir items. We should have grabbed a few goods but we were really short of time. We met Toto at the parking lot.

About 3km away from Borobudur going back to Yogyakarta, we stopped by at another temple, Candi Mendut.

Candi Mendut is built in 9th century AD. It is the oldest of the three temples, the other two is Pawon and Borobudur. These three Buddhist temples are located in one straight line, which is believed to be of religious reason.

Back on the road, we took our free time to catch up on sleep, but not until we were sure that Toto understood that he’ll take us to a good Batik Shop. He said he knows an old shop known for quality batiks.

An hour later, we arrived at Griya Batik Raisa. We found a nice batik fabrics on sale at Rp 100000 each. We bought some to take home as souvenirs for my mom and my mother-in-law.

Our next stop is Prambanan Temple & Ramayana Ballet. Find out how we beat the traffic and made it an hour before Prambanan closed for business.

Selamat Jalan,

My Solo Journey in Singapore was invigorating yet exhausting. It is bound to be more exciting though as Minnie and Christine arrived on the 3rd day.

3rd Day – Kids play at Vivo City & Sentosa Island

I woke up late as usual. My legs still numbed from the long walk I had the previous day. I pushed myself to get ready and make room for my friends arrival. They were fetch by Christine’s cousin, Rose at Changi Airport. Minnie arrived via Singapore Air while Christine came in via Philippine Airlines.

They made it to Azalea Park by 1 PM where they met Mr. R & Mrs. C. They too were excited to dip in the pool when they glanced over from the glass window.

We can’t wait to paint the town and rock Singapura, so off we go for a power lunch to start the day. After a sumptuous feast, we headed to Vivo City. From Outram Park we changed lane going to Harbour Front MRT Station. We went inside the Mall and off to Vivo City Lobby to purchase tickets for Sentosa Express.

Sentosa Express is just one of the many choices to get to Sentosa Island. It is a monorail ride and perhaps the fastest way to get to the island. Ticket priced at S$3 per person per day for the 2-way express ride and admission to Sentosa.

At half passed 4, we were on our way to Sentosa Island. The short ride delighted us with lush greenery and awesome coastal view. We were transported to Imbiah Station where a soaring Merlion greeted us.

Access to Merlion mouth gives one a 360 degrees panoramic view of surrounding islands. I bet its best to go there at night to witness a spectacular show of lights and gleaming Singapore Skyline.

We pass through a suspension bridge where a wonderful cascading waterfalls welcomed us. We later learned that the lush greenery leads to a detour to Mount Imbiah.

The Merlion Walk is equally charming, where a luring wave water pool flows endlessly in a decorated colorful tiles of sea dragons and mermaids. Towards the end is an intricate tower of Carillon Bells. Sunset is fast approaching as we went further down to the beach station.

We wander to where our feet will take us or rather where the tram would make a stop. In this instance, we went down to Palawan Beach. It’s a tropical haven of white sandy beach stretch. One can choose from a number of recreational activities, from beach volleyball, swimming, kayaking, and other water sports. Our senses were filled with nature’s warmth and the refreshing sea breeze cooled us deep inside.

We travel across the hanging bridge to get to a lush islet. Its theme might be an island paradise where one can find a nook to watch the sunset either on the boardwalk or along the beachfront.

We searched for a secluded spot to lounge and eat the snacks we brought in. The Beard Papa’s Cream Puffs were yummy as well as the authentic Singaporean street food on sticks.

We continued our stroll and spotted the Songs of the Sea concert area. We agreed to buy our tickets for the night’s show. To while away the time, we challenged ourselves with the Skyride. Me and Minnie are not a fan though. We both have fear of heights and the thrilling experience of an open-air cable chairlift almost gave us a heart attack. Thank God were still alive. For most of the long journey high above the ground I kept my eyes shut. Fortunately, I was able to take some photos and glanced at the stunning sunset before its too late.

The Luge takes the cake! It was fun and we all love it. Like a kid with our own go-kart / toboggan, we raced and owned the racetrack.

It was getting dark and we hop in at the tram going to Siloso Beach. We don’t have enough time to stroll though as we need to get back and grab a good seat for Songs of the Sea.

Songs of the Sea is a combination of dramatic pyrotechnic effects and water extravaganza that won Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement for Event Spectacular and ASEANTA Award for Best ASEAN New Tourist Attraction both in 2008. I have never seen anything like it before, so I think its a must see for kids and adults alike. Be ready for jaw-dropping laser show, flame bursts & water jets. The expensive entrance fee is worth it and the show puts a perfect end to our day trip in Sentosa.

We crammed to catch the Sentosa Express back to Vivo City.

The view from the rooftop was amazing. A huge Christmas Tree is set up, dazzling with hundreds of lights.

We had our photo ops before calling it a night.

4th Day - Farewell to Singapore, Hello Manila!

My last day in Singapore. Yay!

We made a stop by the swimming pool and grab the chance for photo ops. The blue water is inviting but we need to get on foot or I’ll be late with my flight later.

Of course my Singapore tour wouldn’t end without the usual tourist pose at the most popular Singapore attraction: Merlion Park. We went down at Raffles Place MRT station to walk around One Fullerton. The midday sun is scorching hot and its quite a maze to find what we were looking for. We made it to downtown Marina Bay where we were enthralled with the unique ambience of waterfront promenade. Singapore River flows in at this artificial bay. The apparent development on the bayfront is visible with a good line up of fine dining restaurants and cruise terminal for ducktours and river cruises.

Further ahead, we finally reached Merlion Park. There is a viewing deck stretch through Singapore River that offers superior panoramic sight of the massive Esplanade Theatres on The Bay, Singapore Flyer, the Float and grandstand, and towering Singapore skyline backdrop.

Merlion is a hybrid of lion and fish and known to the world as Singapore’s Icon. It represents the early beginnings of Singapore as a fishing village.

We went back to the condo after our quick lunch.

Much as I want to extend my stay in this beautiful city, I need to get ready to rock Manila.

Thanks so much to Kuya Robert and Ate Cindy for the hospitality. Hugs goes out to Minnie, Christine & Rose for spicing up my Singapore Adventure =)

What is a journey? A journey is not a trip. It’s not a vacation. It’s a process. A discovery. It’s a process of self-discovery. A journey brings us face to face with ourselves. A journey shows us not only the world, but how we fit in it. Does the person create the journey or does the journey create the person? The journey is life itself. Where will life take you?

- LV commercial

Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan weekend getaway where east meets west. It is a major business and cultural hub and a shopping paradise for many.

We got caught up with wedding planning, that we set aside our honeymoon plans. It was only 3 days after the wedding that we booked an impromptu trip to Hong Kong. We snagged a round trip flight via Cebu Pacific for Manila – Hong Kong for two, priced at P 19,718. Fees, taxes and surcharges not included.

We find Hong Kong a good destination for our first out of the country, backpacking trip together. Prior to our travel, I researched for places to see, budget allocations and accommodations. We don’t have a particular Hong Kong itinerary though and agreed to just visit the places we are able to go without stress during our visit.

Good thing one of our friend’s mom is staying in Hong Kong. She arranged for us a very cheap accommodation. It’s a boarding house, no frills, where we were able to rent one room, out of the 3 bedroom apartment. Shared kitchen & bathroom. Just a few minutes walk to the MTR station. It was never a problem since we are out most of the time, but if you’re honeymooning, and would prefer a fancy room, a hotel is a right place which probably costs double of what we paid for.

Day 1 – January 8

Our flight is 5:40 AM at NAIA Terminal 3.We were at the gate at 3:30 in the morning. It was a smooth flow at the check in counter. Although the immigration officer sounds intimidating (as usual). I wonder why they are all grumpy. It kind of affect the excitement you feel. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone greets you with a smile, just like they do with foreign visitors?

A little kwento, when I came back in the Philippines after two years, the immigration officer who inspected me is also stiff. I felt like I wasn’t welcomed at all.

Anyways, back at the airport, fees collected are:

P1,620 per pax for Travel Fee

P750 per pax for Terminal Fee

Again, I felt its a total ripped off. See my post about Boracay Getaway.

We still have an hour left before boarding. We haven’t eaten breakfast yet as we want to have the first taste in Hong Kong. Ferdie couldn’t help but order a cup of coffee at Seattle’s Best to kill time.

The flight from Manila to Hong Kong is 2 hours. Both countries don’t have a time difference but the weather, mannn it’s freezing out there!

The disadvantage of having to fly with low-cost airline like Cebu Pacific, is that they don’t offer free meals on board and no lcd screens in front of you. This is in exchange with the all-year round promo fares. Just get over your boredom and go ahead and entertain yourself by checking out those cotton-like cloud formations during your flight. As for us, we have to catch up with sleep.

Around 8 in the morning, we landed safely in Hong Kong International Airport. We will be meeting Nanay, our friend’s mom, who will show us around and direct us to our accommodation.

If I remember correctly, we filled out a Hong Kong Immigration Form which stated where we will be staying and date of our arrival and departure. Checking out was rather easy. We also collected tourist maps and guides from the airport, its free.

On the way out, we bought our Octopus Card. It costs HK$150 each and has stored value of HK$100. It is quite useful in paying for MTR (Mass Transit Railway), buses, ferries and even in convenient stores and fast food restaurants.

We got our first encounter of public transportation in Hong Kong when we ride the double decker bus going to Tsuen Wan. The trip was fun and we were able to sightsee while the bus made few stops.

At 10 AM, we were having breakfast at where else? KFC! lol. Spent HK$60 for 3 pax. The breakfast meal is composed of one chicken, sausage, bun, coffee and soup. We didn’t like the soup. There’s a whole tomato in it that it tasted sour. I guess Chinese like tomatoes so much, because I of the generous servings in different restaurants we’ve dine in.

After a quick breakfast, we went to a nearby store to buy a sim card for HK$38. We then headed over to our accommodation just across Tsuen Wan MTR station. We met a few Filipina boarders there.

Our room as expected is small with a double deck bed, a/c and a small table. The lower part of the bed can sleep two people. So, we will still be sleeping together. =)

After fixing our things we decided to explore the city. Let the adventure begin!

We planned to see the Tian Tan Buddha at Lantau Island after a peek of how huge it is from the plane. So off we go to MTR to ride the train going to Tung Chung Station.

Here is the map provided by HK MTR:

The HK train map is pretty easy to understand especially because I had experience commuting in Singapore that shares the same train management as in Hong Kong.

All tourist spots are accessible through the train and bus stations but we prefer the train even if it costs more, because its faster.

In Tung Chung Station, and evident in other stations, there are several signpost for landmark directions. Each stations have several exits, so its good that we have our map on hand. We sought the direction going to Ngong Ping 360 or the Cable Ride. Passing through Citygate Outlet Mall along the way, where a good number of signature brand shops are located.

Cable Car Station is outside the MTR station and will take a few minutes walk. Take the escalator behind Citygate Outlet Mall. We paid for Enlightenment Package at HK$159 each which includes round trip Ngong Ping cable car journey, entry to walking with Buddha & Monkey’s Tale Theatre.

I was a bit hesitant because of my fear of heights, but I couldn’t passed up this once in a lifetime opportunity. Oh boy, I think its the longest cable car ride in my entire life. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. We passed above the oceans and hills of Hong Kong. Its a beautiful ride and a must-try when you visit this land. From the cable car, we also get a good view of the massive Buddha structure seated at the mountain peak.

The strong wind made our cabin sway a bit. We were only 7 inside and we were told that on peak days, they allow it to be full, while some passengers stand through the whole journey.

Of course, I was relieved when we landed safe and sound. It was a good 30 minutes ride. We forgot about the camera near the end of the line, so we don’t have any picture perfect souvenir at the cable car.

The view from up there is breathtaking as well as in Ngong Ping Lantau Station. The sun is shining through, but its freezing cold.

The giant Tian Tan Bronze Buddha is seated on top the hill. It was completed in 1993. From the cable station, we still have to trek the road going to the foot of the 268 steps stairway.

Ferdie’s feet were already aching. He had a minor accident the day before the wedding where he lost his balance and fell badly at the hotel stairs. More than a week had pass and its not healed yet.

I told him to just wait for me and not to climb the stairs anymore, but he was insistent. We might not be able to visit Hong Kong again and this chance is hard to miss. So off we go to the journey of 268 steps.

We were glad we took the challenge. We were treated with a spectacular 360 degrees view of surrounding mountains and the blue seascape of Lantau Island. It was freezing cold but the lovely view is inviting so we took few snaps here and there. Aside from the giant Tian Tan Buddha, there are also a smaller bronze Buddhistic statues surrounding it which looked like they are offering something to the Big Buddha.

A refreshment store is available within the area where you can buy snacks and drinks to quench your thirst from the hike. There are also three rooms below the Big Buddha: The Hall of Universe, The Hall of Benevolent Merit, and The Hall of Remembrance. Too bad, we weren’t able to explore those areas. I think it was Hall of remembrance where photos of the deceased are displayed and where prayers are offered.

We didn’t stay long, because we still have to catch up with the showtime for Walking with Buddha and Monkey’s Tale Theatre.

We passed by Po Lin Monastery and were able to witness the ceremony. It is one of those inspiring moment where you get to learn more about the culture and religion of one’s country. There were few people who lit incense.

We move on towards Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car station and checked where the theatres are located.

Walking with Buddha is a short interactive show that features the life of Siddharta Gautama and his journeys on becoming a Buddha. It is quiet an enlightening experience.

The Monkey’s Tale is more of an animation for kids, but we did enjoyed it too.

Time Check: 3:50 PM. We’re off to have a late lunch but we’re still clueless on where to head next.

Only four of us were inside the cable car ride. The wind was crazier than ever that made the ride a bit scarier.

We wanted to sample Chinese cuisine and find good bargains too so we headed to Nathan road. What’s funny is that there is no English translation available in some restaurants. We searched until we found this small restaurant. The poster has English words, so were good. Dinner costs us HK$90. It was not a late lunch but a dinner instead at 6:30 PM.

We explored the surrounding night market and pass by Hong Kong’s nightlife at Lan Kwai Fong road. We got bored and decided to check out Mongkok Night Market.

Bargains here and there. It was truly a shopper’s paradise. We scored a table runner at HK$50 each and souvenir HK T-shirts at HK$100 for 5 pieces. I was set to buy the ceramic egg doll, but we lost our way finding the stall which offered the best price. *sad* Lesson learned, amidst the sea of bargains, grab the first one you think offers the best value off your money. Chances are you’ll never find it again.

Our feet were aching so we stopped by Mc Donald’s to grab our coffee first and discuss our travel itinerary for the next days.

At passed 9 PM, we call it a night and find the nearest MTR station to take us home.

Day 2 – January 9

10:40 AM , We had breakfast at Yoshinoya, just a block away from our accommodation. Again, its freezing cold outside, I have 3 layers of clothing beneath my red jacket. The Yoshinoya power breakfast is appetizing at HK$19 each. It got our loyalty award that during the rest of our stay, it was our first choice to start the day.

Since its Friday, we decided to take advantage of the weekday promo of Hong Kong Disneyland. We got our One-day ticket at HK$295 each. They have slightly higher rates on Saturday and Sunday.

It was pretty easy going there, we used the MTR to Disneyland Resort. We were wary though, that our Octopus Cards are losing credit, so we dropped by the cashier at the MTR to reload. To top up the card, a minimum of 50HKD is required.

Off to Sunny Bay Station where the gateway to magic is located. We rode the MTR Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Line from there, and it was fun. Its not your ordinary train, because the windows are the shape of mickey mouse’s head. The safety handles are mickey mouse inspired too. There are statue gallery of Disneyland characters, separating the seats. We were like kids, transferring seats here and there for photo ops.

A few minutes later, we reached Disneyland. Again we were dazzled by the posh station. Seriously, this trip has a magical effect. It makes me feel giddy and excited. Just like a kid.

There’s a long escalator going up which created a sense of excitement on what lies ahead. Then finally an arc that welcomes you to Hong Kong Disneyland charms you to go inside instantly.

Now, I believe in magical element this place hold. We enjoyed every moment of our stay. We even waited in line to take photographs with Minnie and Mickey, Goofy, Donald Duck and the rest. There was a High School Musical, Chinese version and a boat ride to the jungle. But what I’m drooling most are the expensive trinkets and souvenirs.

It was a small world indeed when we bumped into Ferdie’s friend. They made a stop in Hong Kong and decided to tour before going back to Dubai.

At night time, we waited for the fireworks at sleeping beauty castle. It wasn’t grand but It was beautiful.

At quarter to 8, We were off to the MTR station going home. We made a stop at a food stall near our accommodation to sample some fried delights for dinner.

Day 3 – January 10

Its getting harder to wake up with this weather. Moreover, shower and freshen up. The water heater is working but our body is just numb to feel any warmth in it. Arggh. I heard its 10 degrees Celsius outside.

The day I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. What’s the best thing to do in Hong Kong? You bet it’s shopping time!

From my research, Causeway Bay is the shopping district of Hong Kong and a haven for signature brands and local products as well. The rent here is regarded as one of the most expensive in the world. Among the shopping complex are Sogo and Time Square. Be aware though as it is one of the most crowded area in Hong Kong. Did I mention, we lost each other?

I am eager to tour Ferdie around Ikea since we need some furniture for our new home. Somehow we lost each other at the busiest street of Causeway Bay. When I got in Ikea, he was already there checking out some dining piece.

He was surprised that we spent about 4 hours inside Ikea Store. Well, it’s his first time and I should take him again so he’ll get used to it. lol.

We were able to bring home few goodies and after grabbing some make-up at MAC Cosmetics shop, we are back at the MTR station to head home.

By 8 PM we meet up with Nanay to stroll along Tsuen Wan district. We went into the nearby mall to shop for few more items.

It was nice to walk outside at a cold weather. Its chilly but somehow therapeutic for our tired bodies. It especially helped our stressed out soul from wedding planning. The best medication prescribed: R&R (Rest & Relaxation).

An hour later, with a plastic shopping bag in tow, we went back to our apartment. We managed to grab some street food. Some are yummy but the other tasted much of monosodium glutamate, which I’m not fond of.

We called it a night then.

Day 4 – January 11

Our day started at 10 AM. We had breakfast at Yoshinoya and discussed our itinerary for the day.

We went ahead to MTR station and ride the train going to Central District. We plan to try Hong Kong Peak Tram and see where it will take us. From Central District, its a few more steps to go at the Garden Road Peak Tram Lower Terminus where tickets are sold. We get to enjoy a walk in the park and a quick visit at St. John’s Cathedral. The tall buildings along Central district glistened as the sun came out in full radiance.

We soon reached the The Peak Tram Lower Terminus and bought tickets which cost HK$48 per person. It includes a return ticket via Peak Tram and an entrance to Sky Terrace.

As it was a Sunday, many tourists and locals are already waiting in cue for the peak tram. We were lucky to snag a seat at the left side of the tram, which isn’t a good choice since the spectacular view is on the right side.

Its a short ascend going to The Peak. I guess the highlight of the trip is going up the Sky Terrace. Its the highest viewing platform in Hong Kong that offers a panoramic 360-degree view of seascape, landscape and skyline of Hong Kong.

At the Peak, we passed by Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. It is the house of over 100 wax figures of internationally known personalities. Too bad we’re on a limited budget and time, we weren’t able to mingle with the stars and celebrities. Well, there’s always a next time for a kiss with Brad Pitt and a red carpet experience with Marilyn Monroe.

Further up is an exit that lead to Sky Terrace. It is a wide expanse of viewing deck with coin-operated binoculars available for everyone. Professional Photographers are up for business to get you some picture-perfect moment.

After making rounds and taking photos here and there, we decided to explore the grounds of the Peak. Shortly we cued for the tram going down.

Upon reaching Lower Terminus and walking back to the MTR, we chanced upon some direction going to Hong Kong Park which is only a few blocks away. We went ahead and searched by foot. Glad we did, Hong Kong Park is a walk on nature and has been open to the public since 1991. We were amazed with the artificial lake & waterfall. We’ve also seen the enormous Olympic Square.

We noticed the park is popular for Newlywed Pictorials. There are also newly graduates wearing their toga on tour with their family.

After a quick trip at the park, we had a late lunch at Cafe De Coral. Time flies by past as it was already 2:30 PM.

Later, we headed to Tsim Sha Tsui station. Passing through New World Centre, we are greeted by a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour Waterfront. We had enough time to catch the sunset at the Avenue of Stars from the promenade. The promenade stretch is quite long with hand imprints of more than 100 outstanding professionals of Hong Kong’s film industry from the early 1900’s to 1990’s.

Star Ferries carrying tourist passengers add more charm to the harbour backdrop. Hong Kong’s Skyline is best viewed here from sunset to moonlit where A Symphony of Lights is being played every night. It is a must watch synchronized light, audio and pyrotechnic show that lights up the Hong Kong Skyline for about 15 minutes.

We call it a night early as the weather gets even colder.

Day 5 – January 12

Our flight going home is at 8:25 AM. One of the boarders is in the same flight as ours. She requested that we help her in the airport in case she exceeded the baggage limit. So we did, since our baggage are less than our maximum allowance.

Our flight is on time and we arrived safely back in Manila.

Special Thanks to Jen’s mom for being a great host.

Disneyland & Ikea Hang-over…

Boracay is a tropical island South of the Philippines. A popular tourist destination especially during long holidays like Christmas and Summer.

Location:

Boracay is part of Panay province. It is located off to the Northwest corner or the island of Panay, Western Visayas region.

Best Time to Go:

While it is a cliche to hear, I’d still say Anytime of the year!

If you are looking for a party atmosphere, where tourists and locals flock the island, a sight of water sports everywhere, go during the summer months of March – May, especially during Holy Week. Christmas and New Year celebrations are big events too.

However, if you prefer a serene surrounding where you can lounge at the long stretch of the powdery white sand beach without challenge, go on the lean months of June – September, or almost any weekdays of the year except during Christmas and Summer Season.

Like any other tourist traps, there are issues beyond this lost haven, remember algae formation from the shore which scares few tourists away, waste disposal and rising cost of everything.

Boracay Wanderlust

Day 1

I scored our tickets at Cebu Pacific’s Zero Fare Promo last May 2008. I was able to get hold of a huge discount on two-way airfare tickets for two and just paid P7, 566 excluding terminal fees. This is in time for a holiday vacation in the Philippines and thought it would be a great anniversary gift for my fiance then. I’m also checking about possibilities to get a pre-wedding shoot on this paradise island.

I also think that a weekday at Boracay on 2nd week of December is amongst the best time to explore due to the absence of algae or green moss on this time of the year. Plus the fact that there will only be a few tourists around. People will probably be still at work before Christmas.

So, off we go to Boracay last Dec. 10-12, 2008. Aside from minor changes like moving our flight at 6:30 am instead of 5:10 am, all went smoothly as planned.

We set foot at Caticlan Airport at around 7:30 AM. I admit as organized as I am during my trips, it was the first time I’m armed with no itineraries on hand. Our wedding preparation got in the way that I neglected to do one. I just thought it will be nice to let go of a program this time and just unwind and de-stress before the big day.

We were surprised how business has been going on in Boracay. I think the local government should review the fees table because we felt totally ripped off. I think the normal thing to do is set higher fees to foreign tourists and provide minimal cost to Filipino residents, so every Juan can enjoy and travel to this beautiful island.

Extra Expenses going to Boracay

Since we fly via Cebu Pacific, we headed to the new NAIA terminal 3 and paid P200 terminal fee per person. I always wonder where all these collections are going through and why other countries do not rob people of terminal fees. A 3rd world country where everything should be paid for.

An environmental fee of P50 per person

Ferry Port Terminal Fee of P50 per person

Caticlan Terminal Fee of P20 per person

Anyways reaching Caticlan Airport, we filled out the tourist information sheets required for each visitors. We then went outside to look for ways to get to the jetty port and found the tricycle terminal. It costs us P50, to my dismay, the distance is just a mere 5 minutes walk going to the port.

We purchased our boat tickets at P25 each and paid additional fees I mentioned earlier. Landing to Boracay, we hopped on a tricycle to take us to White Beach. Now, we have not decided where to stay and where to get off. I wasn’t worried since its a weekday and sure enough there aren’t a lot of guests coming in these days. We can easily find a decent place to stay near the beach.

We paid P20 each for the tricycle ride, sharing with other tourists and locals. We have no idea where we were. I just knew that the beach is somewhere at the left side of the road and if we will walk straight, we’ll be seeing the crystal sands and the sea soon. So, off we walk to where the we hear the soft sound of the waves, while constantly checking in for a place to dine for breakfast and affordable accommodations for 3 days too.

After asking someone, we learned that we’re in Station 2. If we walk to the left, we’ll be heading to Station 3 and to the right is Station 1. Good thing, I did made some research about Boracay long time ago and realized that Station 1 offers high-end hotels and restaurants. While Station 2 is for mid-class, and in Station 3 we have a big chance of getting cheap accommodations.

Ferdie and I were hungry by these time. We realized that indeed, Boracay has a long, long, long white beach stretch. We were each holding on to our backpacks then. Oh, did I mention, packing for this trip is my biggest success in all my travels? I did fit in necessary stuff on my backpack, and a shoulder bag. Ferdie has his backpack too. Yay, can I call myself a light traveler now? =)

We found our way at D*Mall and since its too early to pick choices, we sampled the breakfast feast at Andok’s. Oh, let me warn you to not even try to use the public restroom nearby. It was nasty!

After breakfast, we head off to find a place to stay and luckily chanced on this promo by Alice in Wonderland between Station 2 & 3. Its a newly acquired resort with amenities such as huge garden and swimming pool, double detached rooms and a porch with rattan swing. We got an air-con room with its own t&b & television. Plus we can access through wi-fi. All for P1,000 a night.

Much as we want to explore Boracay on a sunny day, our body was craving for some sleep. We never had enough sleep for weeks, so we doze off after choosing our room.

We explored the place a little past noon. I know a perfect place to beat the summer heat and indulge in a sumptuous lunch. We headed off to Jonah’s at Station 1. There’s no place elsewhere which offers the best banana peanut shake in town but in Jonah’s!

We had calamares and sinigang for lunch. Yum!

From Station 1 we stroll towards Station 3 direction. The beach is calm with few tourists wandering around and a lot of locals offering variety of products.

There were amazing sand castles built everywhere, we even saw one that says “Will You Marry Me?” Awww, a sweet proposal by the beach.

After posing for our tripod and catching up with the sunset, we then search for a henna tattoo artist.

My fiance’s first and my… hmmm, nth time? I got a Sun and Moon Princess tattoo while he settles for a dragon.

We checked out some shell charms for pasalubong. Cute trinkets for everyone.

Our main goal for the evening is to find a good island hopping package tour for the next day. On our way back to Station 2, we came across Allan B. Fun Tour booth, they offer Island Hopping tours where we can join in group for P600 per person. The price includes a boat trip to nearby islands: Crystal Cove and Puka Beach from 10 AM – 4 PM. Snorkeling gears are provided for different snorkeling locations, as well as buffet lunch and drinks. Excluded are the entrance fees, environmental fees and such. We’re settled then. =) They made an arrangement to pick us up at our accommodation the next day.

We made our way to D*Mall for dinner. As budget travelers, we pick on items, food, and whatever worthy to spendin for. We were unsuccessful on finding a cheap alternative to the expensive Boracay restaurants.

We had dinner at Island Chicken Inasal. Bacolod chicken and sisig at its best. Bon Appetit!

On our way back to the room, we passed by several bars. We were not really up for a drink, but I wonder how crowded and loud this area could get during summer? We’ve seen these fire dancers putting of an amazing show for the audience. Makes me want to learn those moves too.

Its full moon, Ferdie and I decided to take a dip at the private pool. All tenants must’ve been enjoying the night away, we have the pool all by ourselves.

Tired and exhausted, we call it a night.

Day 2

Rise and shine!

Woke up early for breakfast. We headed to Big Mouth at D*Mall. They have this mouthwatering big combo meal selection. Yay, gotta watch my diet.

Went back to Alice in Wonderland to prepare and get ready for island hopping. Ferdie dropped by at a barber shop for an impromptu haircut.

Our boat is big and has around 20 capacity. We were joined by about 15 people more including foreign visitors.

Our first stop was snorkeling. I have to admit I stayed out of the sun as much as I can since tan lines can ruin my perfect wedding gown. There’s not much to see at the snorkeling area, compared to what we have seen in Bohol. But I did enjoyed my encounter with a puffer fish.

Next is Crystal Cove Island. Did I just smell a photoshoot session? lol.

There are a lot of interesting areas to shoot. If you are like us, who takes hundreds of photos home, you might like to consider who you are with in this trip. We were the last one in the group to get out of Crystal Cove, its not like we were behind the group big time, but the guide was teasing us how we get to shoot to every corner and that we got the best value off our fees. Haha. We can’t explain further that the shoot is for our wedding program.

Off to the next island for a buffet lunch, then for a snorkeling stop again. There is a boatman selling ice cream in the middle of the sea, can you believe that? Priceless.

The waves were scary this time, but we were able to drop by at Puka Beach. Had a swim and pictorials here and there before going back to white beach.

We were exhausted by the time we got back and took some time to rest.

At 6 PM, we decided to have a light meal at Jonah’s. On the way, we realized its high tide. Our usual sand route was underwater now. I didn’t mind dipping my feet in and feeling the waves against me, except Ferdie is really worried about the camera getting wet.

By the time we’re finished with our sandwiches, waves are splashing hard up the walls near Jonah’s. We figured out that its a bit dangerous to cross the same path back again and decided to just take the road on the other side.

We call it an early night.

Day 3

Last day in paradise.

We started the day early and went to stroll the beach and do some more shoot. The water is yet in its pristine, calm self again. The white sand is lovely!

We headed to the grotto to take some photos. At past 10, we went back to our room and prepared to leave. Our flight is scheduled at 4:30 PM.

Checked-out at Alice in Wonderland at 11:30 AM. We still have plenty of time to eat brunch, and search the nearest market for some local delicacies and pasalubongs.

We discovered about talipapa, and the local eateries located there. They serve affordable dining experience. Argghh… too late. They also accepts “paluto” (where one can buy seafood at the wet market and have the restaurant cook it for whatever dish you like). The food is much cheaper compared to the restaurants near the beach.

Boarded the plane at 4:15 PM.

Back to the hectic wedding planning.

I loooove Boracay!
