Come live with me and be my love, And we will all the pleasures prove, That valleys, groves, hills, and fields, Woods, or steepy mountain yields.

Christopher Marlowe

3rd Leg of our Indonesia – Java Adventure { Finally trekking to Mount Bromo! }

Time check: 4 AM | Bromo – Tengger – Semeru National Park, Cemoro Lawang

We were told that the weather goes down at 4 degrees Celcius so I wore 3 layers of clothing down my jacket.

The pick up time should have been earlier than 4 am, to get to the best spot at the viewdeck. I don’t know what our driver was thinking that took him long.

Tip: If you don’t plan to hire a 4×4 jeep service to the Viewdeck and crater, start early at 2 AM. There is a walking path that leads to the Bromo Crater and Mount Penanjakan from the base camp. Those two are located on opposite sides so expect a long walk ahead. The crater is around 3km away from the village of Cemoro Lewang. We paid the entrance fee of IDR 25,000 from the Registration Area prior that day.

We were with two other couples from China and US. Although, me thinks the other is Filipino. We were treated with a smooth ride and paved road going up to Mount Penanjakan. As expected there were already many tourists and our driver had to pull off to the nearest parking he can get. At past 5, we aim to go to the Viewpoint as fast as we can before sunrise escapes from us.

It’s not easy though. With the cold weather and a steep slope, it’s like we were not moving at all. We spent at least 15 – 20 minutes at the rate we were trekking.

I was concentrating hard on my breathing while whispering to myself… you can’t be out of breath, only few more steps and you’ll get there. Oh, that kid is tough. I wish I was a kid. I can do it. Okay, breath in, breath out. Forward now, move your butt! Ah, i need to take 5, what?!

We saw one lady who passed out. There are several vendors offering winter jackets for rent. The air is a mix of morning mist and cigar smoke. That was of no help to my breathing technique.

Finally, the summit! We had to squeezed ourselves with hundreds of visitors waiting for the first glimpse of Sunrise in Mount Bromo. The view deck is on a strategic location covering the sunrise to the left and the view of Mount Batok, Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru to the right.

I kissed the sunrise! And I like it =)

Bromo Sunrise at 6:15 AM. Got a clearing eventually and went camera happy. Wonder why everyone phased out? Ah, that’s it, they moved to the right side. We then went over and join the fun. Found a nook outside the fence, just a few steps to the cliff. I crossed over. yay.

Mount Bromo is the one billowing white smoke, to its right is the dormant Mount Batok and far behind and the highest is Mount Semeru.

Beautiful and mystical! The fog on the ground adds up to the magical feel. I’m awestruck witnessing how this lush nature is hidden here.

Before we get lost in nature’s madness, we head back at 7 AM to the parking area where our jeep tour will carry on to Tengger Caldera. It was a bumpy ride with a priceless view. If we only have so much time, I wanted to stay longer and indulge on this adventure by foot.

From the foot of Mount Bromo, horses and ponies are up for rent to take you to the 250 steps path to the crater.

Beyond the road less traveled

I find it abusive to rent a pony. And even, if I have an extra cash to burn, I’d still say no to the local who wanted to take us for a ride. Well, that’s just me. I’d rather go on trail and take hours than spare my weight at the poor pony.

See the mist behind the horses? Here we are under the mystical scene from the earlier view at Mount Pananjakan. We were walking at Laut Pasir (sea of sand) of fine volcanic sand that surrounds the area.

Long trail ahead. Got to watch out for horse dung. We passed by Pura Luhur Poten Hindu Temple. It holds a significant importance to the Tenggerese tribe who scatter across the mountainous villages such as Ngadisari, Wonokitri, Ngadas, Argosari, Ranu Prani, Ledok Ombo and Wonokerso.

As the decline of Majapahit Kingdom dawned upon these people, they emphatically moved to the outskirts of the volcanoes, which inaccessibility was their greatest asset to fend off any foreign intrusions, especially by the Muslims and Christians.

Mount Batok is a dormant volcano at the northern center of the huge caldera. Lush green vegetation grows over the years.

The 250 steps to Gunung Bromo Crater. Gunung means Mountain. I had to catch my breath and rest before partaking this glorious steps. Find me, concentrating. lol.

At last, from the peak of Mount Bromo, an active volcano which is very much recognizable from afar. The top is blown off where the crater constantly belches white sulphuric smoke.

Parang walang nangyari look. lol.

This is around 8:15 in the morning. Kind of early where you can see the moon peaking out from the sky. If you paid for private jeep and long for more adventure, trek to the end of the fence and go further. Just keep in mind though that this is an active volcano and you’ll never know what’s in store for you. In 2004, two tourists were killed when the volcano spit out molten lava, reaching as far as the Hindu temple. Be sure to keep safe.

As for us who shares the jeep with other tourists, we barely caught our breath, and had to go down again.

Our Mt. Pinatubo Day Trek Challenge was a challenge from the start. It was quite demanding when you have a changing weather, tentative participants and a certain budget to meet.

After some last minute cancellations, we ironed out the final details from budget to transportation and groupings. Check out our Mt. Pinatubo Itinerary here. In the end, we were able to list 18 participants.

18 participants, that goes to say that we were lacking 2 people in the group to make it an even number. We didn’t get any discount with the 4×4 jeeps so we still have to divide the expenses of 20 down to 18. Good thing, we were able to cancel the other van we reserved and the owner was very understanding.

Our meeting time is 2 in the morning at Shell Station in Ayala Avenue. By half past 2, we were already sailing through NLEX.

We we’re down with 1 van and Mhike’s SUV. Mhike agreed to use his car after finding out that the van will not be as comfy if we crowd it.

Tines, Regs, Grace, Malen, Jen A, Jen G, Joanne, Badette, Icze, Cat, Ace, Ferdie and I fit ourselves to the van. We were ready to catch some sleep.

Rogel, Liezl, Anna, Dang & Mhike were behind us.

Since we are going on a convoy. We made a Stop over at Shell Select Bulacan for early breakfast and take-out. Then off to a long road trip again.

Dropped by at Mc Donald’s in Capas to ask for direction and last minute meal provisions. After a few more turns, and gazillion Reycat’s political posters later, we landed at the tourism office.

7:00 AM : We registered and divided the group by 4 jeeps. Each has one driver and a guide. We were so ready for the rough ride, sans any injuries. There were other groups ahead of us and a few more trailing behind.

One hour of rough ride, shallow waters, soft lahar land, ah, this makes a different weekend haven. It is equally an amazing experience should we proceeded by foot. It’s unsafe though during rainy season.

If you want to bring your own off road vehicle, you just need to register from the tourism office and get a guide.

The bumpy ride, amazing blue skies, and rolling hills are some things we love about a nature getaway. Something that our future generation might not see if we aren’t keen on keeping it the way it should be. An all natural stress-relief just by energizing the body and mind while embracing nature.

After bouncing off our energy, we reached a dead end, that seems to be a huge parking lot. From here, we have to walk to the crater for about 1 hour. But since, we weren’t in a hurry and we don’t have enough preparation to trek, we’re taking it slowly. Photo op for the most part of the break.

The trail seemed unending. I was so close in asking our guide, “are we there yet?”

So much for expecting a 30 minutes trek. The road was badly out of shape. Huge rocks from everywhere, which forced the jeep club to make the parking area a pit stop. This left us with only one choice, to trek for 1 hour and 20 minutes to the crater lake.

A light drizzle welcomed us when we reach the crater. The sky is a mix of dark clouds and blue horizon with the occasional sun streak.

The view is breathtaking, I can’t even imagine if I can make a fine print of Mt. Pinatubo in my mind. Everywhere we stand is a different landscape view. The crater lake have taken the boundaries of 3 towns, Pampanga, Zambales and Tarlac.

It saddens me that years from now, this place will just be a part of history. The surrounding lahar mountain walls are eroding gradually. The caldera may eventually collapse and this park and crater will be gone forever.

We positioned ourselves to eat lunch down the crater. Some groups hired the boat to transport them to the other side of the crater for P350 each. The others were more adventurous and took a dip through the cold waters.

The heavy rain poured after our delicious meal. We had to seek comfort at the nearest picnic hut. We used the time to introduce everyone to each other.

When the rain finally stopped, our guide proposed to start our trek back to the jeep. We are an hour early but we never know if the rain will be stronger so instead of risking to be trapped in our soaking clothes, we followed our guide without uncertainty.

It was a different trekking experience this time. The rain shower was heavier but I enjoyed it and almost everyone did. Its a nice diversion while concentrating on not to trip over the sharp rock edges. The cool water streams are soothing too. I miss the rain. and it was the first time I trek under such bad weather. But it was a blessing. No one was hurt.

As if the weather was teasing us, the rain stopped when we reached the parking area. And for the record, some of us were able to doze off during a bumpy ride. Exhaustion took its toll that even the sharp turn and rugged terrain feels like a rhythm swinging us to sleep.

Use of bathroom at Mt. Pinatubo Spa Town is P100 each. It comes with a towel, soap and locker. We find the price a bit steep but we can’t help but to avail this to shower and change clothes following our encounter with dusty road and a surprised nature shower.

When everyone is refreshed, It is then a battle between Sisig Restaurant and Isdaan. Sisig Restaurant won by slightly a few more votes. Headed to Angeles City to savor the best Sisig in town, tokwa’t baboy and more before going home.

We had a blast and even if it was just a day of adventure, we were able to shake off some stress, get away from the bustling city life, reunite with old friends and gain some new ones.

Summer gets warmer with fabulous crew around. More about our adventures as we’ve plunged deeply into our Lakbay Norte Experience.

If you are interested on a budget travel to the North, hop in to read our Ilocos itinerary and check the customized 3 days adventure which covers cultural, historic and nature encounter at its best.

Day 1 covers Historical tour and Cultural exposure to Ilocanos Heritage.

Day 2 offers a different kind of fun. Summer, Sun, Sea and Sand. What more can we ask for?

Day 3 filled our hungry soul with authentic Batac Empanada, blast from the past to Juan Luna Shrine and unleashed the kid within us at Gov. Singson’s Baluarte.

So, what really happened on Day 2?

Day 2 : Sun Kissed!

Our day started early to catch up with the morning sky at Bangui Windmills. The “Wind Farm” is located at the shoreline facing South China Sea. This amazing structure is the biggest in Southeast Asia which consists of 15 wind turbines that generates 40% of power requirement of Ilocos Norte.

Notice the towering size of each wind turbines.

The giant blades are stationary by the time we arrived. I think the mechanism is on a timer to simulate only in the afternoon, like we we were able to catch on our previous visits.

Our 2nd destination is Blue Lagoon Cove, Maira-Ira Beach in Pagudpud. It was once a secret destination, tucked away in the hamlet of the northernmost tip of Luzon. My vague memory of this virgin beach consist of unspoiled powdery white sands, deep blue waters and soothing sea breeze that fills our mind only with nothingness. It is Boracay of the North, minus the heavy commercialization.

Four years ago, there were no accommodations available except to pitch tent by the beach front. No restrooms for the public and we had to ask permissions from the local to make use of their personal bathroom. No pushy souvenir sellers and only few people stroll the beach even on weekends.

Our visit surprised us with lots of major changes in this hidden paradise. Hotels and Home-stay now mushroomed within the vicinity. The price of everything sky-rocketed too. Oh well, so much for developments.

We settled for the shabby cottage where we have the best location on hand at the center of the cove, we can either go to the left side of the beach stretch where all the hotel guests frolic under the sun or stroll on the right side, the less-traveled sand. The waves at Blue Lagoon get crazier at noon, so I would much prefer to lounge at the sea bed on the right side where the water is serene.

Rock the beach! Shoot here and there. Nikon and Canon are our new bffs.

Our lunch was heavenly. We have grilled fish and pork and all things luscious. Diet wasn’t on our vocabulary for the last days.

We have 4 hours to celebrate and be merry, swim and get a tan before we head to our next stop.

We were supposed to go to Ilocos – Cagayan Boundary Canopy but dark clouds signal a heavy downpour on that side of town, so we skipped it on our list. We hit the end of the long and winding road of Patapat bridge, and made a stop at Paraiso ni Anton (Anton’s Paradise). The Grotto of Mother Mary and the refreshing water coming from the mountain is said to be miraculous. Tourists and locals alike bring home a bottle or two for its healing power.

The northernmost road of Ilocos Norte is where the breathtaking Patapat Viaduct is located. This elevated concrete highway bridge is the window to Cagayan Valley Region. To it’s right is the lush Cordillera Mountain Range , and to it’s left is the scenic Pasaleng Bay. It’s the fourth longest bridge in the Philippines.

Further ahead to our next stop, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in the town of Burgos. This site is the newest addition to Ilocos tourist spots. Popular for it’s strangely shaped formation that is intricately created by nature through time.

The off-road adventure was quite long. Dusty rough road on summer and muddy on rainy days. I was losing hope that if we encounter flat tire any minute, it wouldn’t be worth it. Then, we reached the end towards the make-shift car park. We have to walk from this point forward. It’s only a few meters away from the coastline, and from an eyesight we can already view the awesome rock.

Check the first photo on this post and see how massive this structure is. The waves crash against the boulder just a few feet below.

The trail by foot going to Kapurpurawan Rocks can be tricky. It isn’t advisable to go on a rainy season as sharp coral rocks bound the path. One slip and you’ll get yourself in serious emergency.

Finally, for our last stop and saving the best for sunset shoot, we headed to Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, still in Burgos town. The highest lighthouse and the oldest in the Philippines is located in the hill of Vigia de Nagparitan overlooking South China Sea. It was constructed in 1892 and it is still operational with the addition of solar panels.

We truly enjoyed the weather and the company. As usual we were welcomed with a delicious dinner at home.

A heartwarming thanks to Andres family for adopting us during our Northern Luzon trip.

I am in for a bit more reminiscing after writing about our Sagada Adventure here. But before that awesome trip, there was first Mt. Pulag story.

Scaling Mt. Pulag or Mt. Pulog in 2005 was probably the biggest challenge to our group. Being passionate about mountaineering, I only dreamed of reaching it’s peak and I’ll be the happiest person ever. By far, the most thrilling and overwhelming adventure I had organized in my life.

Our itinerary was timed at a long holiday on Oct. 28 – Nov. 2, 2005.

Our ambitious trail would lead us to: Manila – Baguio – Mt. Pulag – Sagada – Baguio – Manila

It took a month of planning, hours of online research, coordination, pre-climb meetings, and hurt wallets, before everything was ironed out. I asked every participants to do physical preparation as well and indulge their selves with exercise and cardio activities to warm up for this demanding event.

Mount Pulag is the highest point in Luzon and the 3rd highest mountain in the Philippines. Located 2,922 meters above sea level, the locals of Benguet consider this place sacred. We expect a major climb, but only the determined ones are rewarded with awesome visual treats, spectacular sun rise and sea of clouds.

The high altitude is a home to diverse flora and fauna, pine trees and mossy forest. During January – February, temperature drops to its lowest that sometimes make freezing mist.

1st Day – Breathing Fresh Air

The group met up at Victory Bus Liner in Pasay and reserved our tickets to Baguio. Our waiting time and long road trip gave way to bond and meet the unfamiliar faces behind the 16 participants name.

*Me, Asi, Allan, Ferdie, JP, Leila, Badet, Jeff, James, Dang, Pilo, Sonny, Precy, Tessa, Shirley & Setiel

We reached Baguio at 4 AM. The cool air brushed our tension away and just left us with raging excitement for the day’s development. We bought breakfast to fill our energy. Our jeep was pre-arranged through Mang Roger. He was really helpful in making our plan an ultimate success, providing us with the most sufficient driver, Kuya Noli.

Our service dropped us at Babadac Jump- off point to register at the DENR station. On our way, we passed by the breathtaking Ambuklao Dam.

An hour before 12 noon, we reached the DENR station where visitors are required to register and attend the 15 minutes in-house seminar. This is the jump-off point to Mt. Pulag. It also houses a souvenir shop.

After our last minute check. we’re off to a rough road adventure. Some even enjoyed the vantage point at the top load (atop the jeepney’s roof). But not for long, we’re not even far yet from the station, when our jeepney driver declared that our transport will not be able to make it through the bad road condition. Our jeep was trapped at the muddy pool, even at several trials, it can’t pull off to bring us to the Ranger’s station.

We don’t have a choice but go on foot. This is a sudden change of plan, although I am half-expecting it already, but some from the group may have ignored my preemptive warning during our many meetings. We walked almost 5 hours to get to the Ranger’s station. We were so behind schedule due to our low pacing.

The path is breathtaking, not too steep. But between cold weather and fatigue, we felt a degree of difficulty in breathing. The long walk was exhausting, considering at least 15 kilos on our back and I wouldn’t even start with how much the men can handle. But the environment seemed to soothe our weary bodies. The cold wind blows softly through our stressed out mind. Hiking through Ambangeg trail was physically draining, yet it gives one a quite time to go on and walk further with much adrenaline.

Finally when we reached Ranger Station, everyone recharged with snacks and steal a few zzzs. Everyone seemed hesitant to go on a night trek as the weather drops lower.

We departed just before 6 in the evening from Ranger’s Station. A long, cold and dark night accompanied us. Our group was eventually broken into small groups. Our many rest stops were a bliss.

We understand that we can’t pitch tent anywhere as this is a rule within the boundaries of Pulag National Park. As we trek along the looming darkness, I feared for our safety. I fear about others losing hope in reaching the camp seeing exhaustion and effect of cold weather. God’s grace worked most powerful that time, we all reached Camp 2 safely before 12 midnight.

Some interesting and funny highlights of our first night:

*JP who struggle to bring his cathedral tent to accommodate all of us was the one who got evicted and has nowhere to sleep to.

*Sonny and Tessa shared a tent.

*The mystery behind the culprit of spreading bad gas on a very soothing air of Mt. Pulag.

We thank our boys whom beyond our stressful day were able to cook our food for the evening. Though everyone seemed exhausted and cold enough to eat and be merry.

2nd day - Race to the Peak

Our supposed call time was 4:30 in the morning, but the weather crept on us like a blanket that lulls as more to sleep. We literally drag ourselves to move and go hiking 30 minutes later.

The grassland summit seemed close, yet so far. From Camp 2, we have to trek for around 2 hours to get to the Peak Summit. Ah, the torture, yet again. But we can’t deny, it’s all worth it.

Sunrise can’t wait and we witnessed it on trail. Apparently, there are many groups ahead of us, Mountaineering Federations of the Philippines, Inc., Sabit Mountaineers, and more.

The sea of clouds were not as we expected, maybe because we climb too late but nonetheless, we are awestruck by the green rolling hills, amazed at how many we’ve crossed just to get on top. It was a wonderful feeling.

Pulag is referred as a Bald mountain. The grassland, well, not a single tree on the peak. I bet Tiger Woods will have a blast on this giant golf course.

We can’t stay long enough to savor this great achievement, and before the thought creeps in that we conquered the highest peak in Luzon, we realized that we needed to get back to our campsite soon. Maybe less than 2 hours of trek this time.

We were greeted by a sumptuous feast on our arrival to the camp courtesy of our group mates who decided to stay away from the trail early. We were all hungry for breakfast.

At half past 10 in the morning, we cleaned up. Break Camp and did last minute check before going down. As mountaineers, we are an advocate on preserving the natural beauty of our environment. All things we brought with us, shall also be going down, and leave the area, as if we were never there. Too bad some people aren’t responsible enough to clean their own mess.

At 5:00 in the afternoon, we reached the DENR Station, all sweaty and eager to freshen up. We had minor issues with the availability of jeepney service that caused our delay. We signed out from the registration book and checked some souvenir shirts to take home.

We are headed to Sagada! Sonny, Setiel, Leila and JP have priorities to attend to and can’t make it with us, so they joined the other jeep going to Baguio instead. James who’s original plan was to go with them, gave in to our prodding and joined us in Sagada only until the following morning.

———————————————
Important Reminder and Tips:

1. Prearranged the vehicles only with Mang Roger as there has been reported criminal cases and theft from unreliable agents.

2. Prepare physically and mentally weeks prior to the climb. Climbing in cold weather is life threatening, more so, hypothermia can cause death.

3. Another great option if you want to stay out of the strenuous trek is to stay at Rangers Station for the night, leave your bags there and do a peak assault early morning to catch the sunrise.

4. If you are intending to follow our itinerary, be sure to go early at the peak.

5. To maximize your Mt. Pulag Experience, climb between January to March and enjoy the freezing weather.

.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

- Robert Frost

This ought to be the best days of my life as I discovered something entirely different from what I’ve known all along about the Philippines. I guess my companions shall agree with me.

Ah, Sagada… how do I begin? There aren’t enough words to describe it. The positive energy just spreads all over town and whenever I reminisce about Sagada, I become speechless yet my mind starts wandering to this utterly beautiful place. I wonder how the charm of this quaint town brought about some peacefulness even to the most restless soul.

Sagada is located at the Mountain Province of North Luzon. It is a town of 10 municipalities, nestling in the middle of a valley at the upper end of Malitep Tributary of the Chico River, 1,500 meters above sea level. Its lofty little town, dirt-free air, and sights of towering pine trees, for every visitor, represents an ambiance of tranquility & peaceful life.

{ Click Sagada Map for a large format }

It was in 2005 when we planned our Mt. Pulag Assault. Since we will be going on a long holiday for All Saint’s Day, we figured out, this is the best time to hit two birds in one stone. Sagada is accessible via Kabayan route which isn’t far from Mt. Pulag. The road is deadly though. I can’t imagine myself crossing the same route again.

We left around 6 PM from Mt. Pulag DENR Station with one stop, to eat at a local eatery which serves lemons for free (to go with soy sauce) as an alternative to our usual kalamansi. So good things are free here.

Six hours of heart-stopping road trip to Sagada. We rented the popular Mang Roger’s Jeepney that took us from Baguio to Mt. Pulag and now to Sagada. I was seated right next to the driver. We’re not traveling on the highway but on a shortcut route. The rough road is usually use on mornings by Vegetable delivery trucks plying Sagada to Baguio. It looks to me as one lane, so I can’t grasp how drivers deal with a two- way traffic. Not that it usually happens.

Coming from our Mt. Pulag descent, my tired body can’t even move an inch or rest for a minute, I felt like our one foot is on the verge of the cliff, something might just go wrong. The fog enveloped most of the road, and I could only process that both sides of the road are cliffs, yet, through the dark I couldn’t figure out how deep we’ll fall.

Ah, the dream of a nature seeker’s thrill. I hushed my brain from thinking a tragic end to our journey. We could be on the headline the following day and I am responsible. Oh my. My first major attempt to lead the pack and there. God knows how I prayed hard to get us safely to Sagada. All 6 hours of our journey.

On the other hand, all were silent at the back of the jeep. They too are speechless to the looming darkness and maybe holding on to dear life.

I found new respect to our driver though. He is indeed the best driver in the world. No one messes with him.

We reached Sagada after midnight. The whole town was asleep. We were greeted by Regs, who missed out our Mt. Pulag assault and just decided to go ahead of us in Sagada with his wife. They already arranged our accommodation.

We got a room from Alapo’s View Inn and another one in the fronting rustic house.

Headcount: 19 | Participants:

The unwearied bodies of Mt. Pulag accomplices : Moi, Asi, Allan, Ferdie, Badet, Jeff, Dang, Pilo, Precy, Tessa, Shirley & James, who just spent half a day tour in Sagada and left for urgent matters to Baguio.

New companion who reached Sagada earlier: Regs, Grace, Kathy, Kitten, Jill, Chester and Jayvee

First Day – Oct 31 { Monday }

We dropped by at the Town’s Municipal Hall for registration. The local government strictly implements hiring guides for the safety and the protection of Sagada.

The itinerary we brought with us was just a guide of places to see. We were only prepared to squeezed it on a short 2 whole day trip and a half.

After arranging our itineraries and meeting our guides, we went ahead with our first stop.

Sumaguing Cave. On our way to the cave, our driver pulled off to the left side of the road. We were clueless, but our guide spoke and told us to get down and see “Sugong Coffins” hanged on the rock wall across the road.

A bird’s eye view of century-old, hanging coffins from afar. Its amazing to see it is still intact despite the years and harsh weather. Its creepy but amazing somehow to connect with the history and culture of Sagada.

Further ahead, we were excited to go spelunking to Sumaguing Cave, known locally as the “Big Cave”. A vast formation of stalactites & stalagmites beautifully carved by time. It has the largest chamber connecting all 60 caves in town.

There were groups ahead of us. Our curious clamoring led us to sharp & slippery rocks, dark and wet entrance. It only helped slow down our pacing.

It’s hard to stay dry once inside. There were water pools, dipping area and curtain falls, nature’s wonders at its best. Its amazing how such beauty formed in time and hidden in the dark. There is a dipping area, more than 8 feet deep for the bravest of heart. The water seemed crystal to our lights, yet cold as ice.

A perfect place for photo op.

I wish that the beauty of Sumaguing Cave stays forever, without the waste and vandalism.

Our Next Stop is the Lumiang Burial Cave

Our spelunking at Sumaguing Cave left us all sweaty and muddy and we can’t find any water resource nearby. We made a short trip to Lumiang Burial Cave to check out the wooden coffins located just at the cave’s entrance. There were some bones scattered around, and we heard that there were cases of stealing bones in the area, for the reason I cannot fathom. For souvenir perhaps?

We were told that if we go the 2nd time around in Sagada, we should try the 4 hours spelunking starting off at the mouth of Lumiang Cave and ending at the chamber of Sumaguing Cave. He warns though that it is quite dangerous and is only fit for the hard core thrill seekers.

I got intrigued though and secretly noted that.

Good thing our lodge is only about 30mins from the Cave. We were all wasted to go for another activity so we washed off and rest until noon.

James who’s original plan was to get back to Baguio on Nov. 1, left that morning. He missed out our spelunking but did had the chance to wander around St. Mary’s Ground while we’re out. We were told by the locals that there will be no transport going out of Sagada by Nov. 1, and James had to attend some priorities in Baguio. He decided to leave before lunch on Oct 31. The next day we saw at least 3 buses waiting for passengers… poor James.

Just before sunset, we stroll at St. Mary’s Ground. A Halloween party is being prepared. Children were dressed up with their scary and fun costumes. Later that night we watched a portion of their performance at the church. Trick or Treats?

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, The Mission of St. Mary the Virgin, is the heart of Sagada. It was built in 1904 by American Missionaries, a known province of Anglican Communion, the third largest Christian communion in the world. Sagada has also become the only Philippine town that is predominantly Protestant with almost 95% baptized into the Episcopal Church.

A walk at the ground, we discovered the old bell on display. Further behind the Church, was the Calvary Hill. Some local folks perform rituals on the eve of all Saint’s day. The smoke coming from the cemetery isn’t a usual sight. The weather dropped as the evening falls.

The Echo Valley is a sight to behold, the jagged rock formations tower across our view. It is a memorial cliff with more than hundred year old coffins hanged in the air. Sagada people prefers to bury their deceased through wooden coffins kept in caves, or hanged above the ground as high as possible. It still remains a practice today by old locals. It is said that the higher it is placed the closer it is to heaven.

Life in Sagada is easy and downright simple. It’s hard not to be captivated by the warmth and charming smile of Sagada People. We noticed they spoke English better than Tagalog. The frequent visit of foreign tourists must have contributed a lot.

The town sleeps early as 8 in the evening. I was kind of worried though as the cell network gets cut off at around 9 or 10 at night and returns the next day. There were limited options for ATM, banks and land phones.

Second Day – Nov 1 { Tuesday }

We started the day early and headed to Bomod-Ok Falls. It’s also known locally as the “Big Falls”. Indeed it is, when we reached the location after almost 2 hours of trek.

The long walk was quite exhilarating, especially on a hot day. The trail is awesome, like that of Banaue Rice Terraces, although the cemented steps gave it away. If I could only bring home the serenity of this place, and fill my bag with peace, I can have a lifetime of worry-free life.

After few scratches and fallen debris (oopps, fallen bottled water), we were greeted with the “majestic (put all superlatives here) Big Falls”. For the full effect, visit during the cold months or rainy season. Basking in the sun was all worth it.

The freezing water penetrates and soothes our tortured bodies. We were like kids who instantly changed moods to super and just wanted to dive in the waters. The slippery rocks and the strong current didn’t made it easy for us though.

There were local children who offers a form of foot spa, which is very unique. I haven’t been tickled on my feet for a long time. lol.

The journey back home was a breeze, so much for a tanned look.

Badet, was celebrating her birthday. Jeff, her then boyfriend (now husband), collaborated with us to surprise her. I was impressed that with the limited supply in Sagada that time, her boyfriend was able to find a cake and a candle. During breakfast, we sang her a birthday song, much to her astonishment.

We visited Yoghurt House in the afternoon. The place is cozy and warm. I can imagine sitting by the fireplace all day with all their reading materials and magazines. Masferre Photographs serves a visual treat, displayed on the walls. The place can only fit a small number of guests though and we had to wait for a while before getting a table. The weather drops this time.

We were able to visit some souvenir shops, Sagada Weaving, Igorot’s Souvenir Shop, Masferre’s Souvenir Shop and even ukay-ukays. lol. Most of the items though are available in Baguio, so if you are penny-pinching like me, consider comparing prices before buying.

Third Day – Nov 2 { Wednesday }

We are heading home. But we’re going to rock Baguio first.

Sagada town is such a charming place that everyone seemed hesitant to leave. Its 14 hours away from Manila, and God knows when we will be setting foot again or if we will be seeing the same ground when we get back. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, all I ever dreamed was to settle there for a little longer and escape the stress of city life.

We had a little issue with the lodging but all were settled then.

We reached Baguio at half past 5 in the afternoon. We still had plenty of time to stroll, shop for pasalubong, and have a sumptuous group dinner at Burnham Park.

We took the 10 PM bus bound to Manila. Everyone was able to return home safely. Thank God.

We love Sagada. We’ll be back soon.

Al Ain, literally means The Eye or The Spring is the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With a population of 421,948 (2005 estimate), Al Ain is dubbed the Garden City of the UAE. It is located in Abu Dhabi (emirate), directly adjacent to the border with Oman. The freeways connecting Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai form a geographic triangle in the center of the country, each city roughly 150 kilometers from the other two. Ref: wikipedia

Me and my two friends with a new acquaintance, Farhan braved the summer heat off to the outskirts of Dubai. We had a long holiday and what better way to spend the weekend than to plan a getaway.

At 8 AM on March 2008, we gather ourselves for a much needed break. Our new acquaintance will drive for us.

As we passed by Sheikh Zayed Road, our eyes were caught by these beautiful creatures. Fabulous Peacocks showcasing their gorgeous feathers. Around 50 of them roaming freely around Sheikh Mohammad Palace.

Visitors are only allowed to make a U-turn at the Palace ground so I have those snapshots taken inside our car. These eye-candies are amazing, I wanted to take one home.

We were back on the road in no time, and traveled for about 2 hours going to Al Ain. There were hardly any vehicles on the highway connecting Dubai to Al Ain, that made our trip a breeze.

Al Ain is famous for its roundabouts. The roundabout intersections are distinct to almost every corner.

Our first stop was Al Ain Oasis. Located between Main souq area downtown and Al Ain Street. This is home to the thousands of date palms and known for its largest underground irrigation system. There are also old building ruins along the way which they plan to restore.

We decided to visit Al Ain Zoo. It was all our first time to be there and I did enjoy our animal encounters. Moreover, Farhan, was like a kid craving for more to see. I was in awe to see rhinoceros and storks, among others.

We left Al Ain Zoo around 11 am and seek our way to Jebel Hafeet. It is located between a desert and its magnificent sand dunes to the west and the jagged and impressive Hajar Mountains. Jebel Hafeet is the second tallest mountain in the United Arab Emirates (1350 m).

The road going up is steep zigzag slope. We passed by Green Mubazzarah Park, which has a stretch of hilly mountains covered by grasses. The three view decks of Jebel Hafeet offers equally beautiful, spectacular views. Each has a parking area. There is an isolated hotel halfway, the Mercure Hafeet, with its panoramic view, I still find it an odd location. Who prefers to stay there?

There is a construction at the top of Jebel Hafeet. Farhan said it was a palace of the crowned prince. Hmmm, impressive but quite dangerous. Ever heard of landslides?

Basking in the sun’s glory at noon is not a good idea. The best time to go for viewing pleasure is just before sunset or hit the road before dawn. Looking down, dark and hazy clouds were covering most of the great views of the mountains and sand dunes.

After the short visit, we headed to Al Ain Mall to for a late lunch. The newly opened Dubai Outlet Mall is on the way, so we dropped by to take a peek of what’s in store before heading home. We were done at 5 pm.

Tips: Its best to go during winter, naturally not on a summer’s scorching heat. Not much to see from up there, except for a visual treat of sand dunes and patches of greens.

Our stressed out soul longed for visual thrills and weekend frenzy. You can tell our inner nature seeker selves just got happy from this befitting adventure.

Day 2 of Bulacan Ultimate Weekend Challenge

Our morning started out late. I guess the only one who made it to the peak at the crack of dawn was Rob who missed out our socials the previous night.

I got up at 7 and noticed that the other group was already preparing breakfast while most on my troupe were still dreaming. Bong and Rob decided to go down and fetch some water.

We all crammed up for Pork Adobo, Salted Egg with chopped tomatoes and Scrambled Egg with Mushroom for breakfast. To top it all, a warm coffee to start our day.

Someone’s missing and catching up some more zzz’s. Can you guess who?

After the delightful feast, we busy ourselves with cleaning up and preparing to break camp. Our Mt. Manalmon assault isn’t complete without a hike to the peak. We got crazy over group photos and jump shots taken with the amazing bird’s eye view of Bulacan province as backdrop.

We were more thrilled when Super Bong aka Guide Extremist, did jump and climb to the other rock summit.

As much as we want to stay longer for more photo session, we were running out of time. We did a last group photo and offered a prayer for safety before vacating the campsite. Time check: 11 AM.

Descending requires less effort. We made a few stop and rest. Everyone seemed excited with the next activity. We headed down to Madlum Training Center to drop our bags.

We while away the time by resting and getting ready for another challenge. Then, we’re off to the monkey bridge. The challenge seemed easy from the looks of those little kids jumping over and over again off those cable wires down to the deep river. You can’t see fear on their faces, yet they were full of excitement and happiness. On my second try, the nerve-racking feel won’t go away. I bet the rest were haunted by fear too. Then again, peer pressure was more powerful. It’s still worth another million try though, with much zest every time.

We then proceed to trek the steep trail up to Bayukbok Caves. The sizzling weather can’t take our spirits down and we’re ready to conquer our fears. Our spelunking was a test of endurance and brave heart. Climbing up a ladder, bouldering, striding from one cliff to another, and most of the time struggling, crawling and stretching out to fit ourselves through the chambers.

Bayukbok Caves showcase beautiful limestone formation dating hundred years. Awesome Stalactites and stalagmites at the Men’s Room aka Sensational Room kept Toni and the girls giddy.

Ada may have faced her greatest fear, but conquered it with much motivation from everyone. Bong did caught our attention when he jumped out of the cliff and back. It was a dangerous act that only our super guide can do.

Back at the training center, we had a super late lunch. Pork Sinigang and Fried Tilapia for Lunch ala Dinner.

We had a quick dip at the river before packing up for home.

Some of us weren’t first timers in this ground and some are newbies whose eager to take the challenge.

It would be too cool if our itinerary were followed on schedule but circumstances get in the way and we were behind our timetable… in short, merong late.

After two weeks of planning, change of venue, event promotion and pre-climb meeting, our group was conceived. Precy who is single and ready to mingle will be leaving again soon for overseas work and a change of career. She was with Flor, her younger sister and a grade school teacher. MALEN (yes, in all caps) who lost contact with Mouhics after College, can’t wait to RAPPEL. She was with Toni, the giddy girl in the Men’s Room. Ada, the Manalmon-Madlum Survivor (except for the Monkey Bridge), Kathe, high energy happiness and Dale, the super blessed human being. Pat, the Spam and Imported goodies Man, who is on vacation till end of this month, Rod, the quiet first-timer. Mac, who can’t get over the hearts on our super guide Bong’s eyes. Someone to watch out for is Rob, who took beautiful photos. Jen, who is better late than never. Ferdie, the mountain shet este the mountain chef and Me, whom you’ll never wish to take on a rappel challenge unless you’re willing to wait 30 minutes as I get myself ready.

All set, we took Baliuag Transit in Cubao going to Kamias, San Miguel, Bulacan at 9 AM. From there, we hopped in to our arranged jeepney to take us to the town market. We used our last minute chance to buy our packed lunch and ingredients for dinner and breakfast.

We reached Madlum at almost 2 in the afternoon. The low water level at Madlum river let us crossed to the other side on foot.

Registered at Madlum Training Center, had a quick lunch and prepared ourselves for rappelling activity.

We watched how Bong, Mac & Pat set up the rappel venue. Ropes and System: check. The jump site is lower than what we’ve conquered on 2006. When everything was ready, Mac did the first rappel down, while Bong and Pat gave us an introduction to Rappelling.

The fearless girls followed through and all of us survived the challenged even with wobbly knees, cold feet and sweaty hands. When I thought I could push myself easily down the jump site thinking this is only half of what I conquered last time, it still took me minutes to make the first step off the wall. Feels like the first, eh?

After more than 2 hours, we’re off to the Training Center, packed and set ourselves for a night trek to Mt. Manalmon camp site.

The trek wasn’t rigid, we passed through the river and off to the wilderness.

I guess we’re all on the same stamina level, newbies and oldies alike. The lack of training and outdoor activities for so long made our ascent a little strenuous. Climbing together again after so many years brought along some good and funny memories along the way.

Ada got a sprained leg but still managed it to the camp site.

A different group ahead of us occupied half of the camp site while we settled at the lower half. Its like a war site later, everyone battling to pitch tent right away and rest.

After the sudden commotion, our chef, Ferdie, lead the cooking session for dinner. We had grilled liempo and tinola for dinner. We gathered around for the yummy feast.

At socials, everyone loosened up over the BaR vodka and Generoso brandy. Sharing something about ourselves and reminiscing old times are great starter for new friendship and bonding sessions.

We call it a night at around 2 in the morning.

Watch out for Bulacan Ultimate Weekend Challenge day 2: Spelunking at Bayukbok Caves & Crossing the Monkey Bridge.
